The amino acid carnitine is a primary energy metabolite often used by athletes to increase their performance. It has been linked to increased endurance, higher energy levels, and decreased muscle fatigue.

Vital to the production of energy for the heart and other muscles, carnitine transfers fatty acids into the cell for burning. The body's increased metabolism of fatty acids triggers reactions that provide energy to both the brain and muscles and helps to alleviate the muscular weakness often associated with weight loss.
